Older adults who spent about 16.5 hours a week over three months learning quilting or digital photography showed improved episodic memory [the ability to recall specific events].

Those assigned to low-challenge social activities showed no cognitive gains. Some memory benefits in the high-challenge group lasted up to one year.

The key finding was not novelty alone. It was challenge level. The activity had to require sustained mental effort to produce results. This brings us to a concept that may explain why novelty matters more than most people realize.

Cognitive Reserve: Your Brain’s Built-In Buffer

Think of cognitive reserve as a savings account your brain draws on when things get harder. The more experiences, skills, and learning you accumulate across your lifetime, the more buffer you have against the effects of aging on the brain.

Research published in PLOS Medicine following a community cohort in Stockholm over nine years found that late-life cognitive reserve aging activities were associated with a relative risk of dementia of 0.52 (95% CI 0.37 to 0.73), meaning those with more reserve-building activities had a notably lower observed risk (PMC5349652).

That is an association, not proof of causation. Other health and lifestyle factors cannot be fully ruled out.

There is also an honest caveat worth knowing. High cognitive reserve may delay when symptoms appear, but it does not stop underlying disease from progressing.

Once decline begins in high-reserve individuals, it can sometimes move faster. The good news is that you do not need a research lab to put this to work.

What Trying New Things Actually Looks Like

Here is what this looks like in real life. If you plan to add physical activities like dance, hiking, or swimming as part of a brain-health routine, speak with your doctor first, especially if you have heart disease, balance concerns, or joint problems.

For cognitive novelty, research points to three practical tiers:

  • High-challenge skill learning. Learn a new instrument, a new language, digital photography, woodworking, or pottery. These require working memory, attention, and sustained effort, the combination the Synapse Project found most useful.
  • Novel social-cognitive combinations. Join a group where you must actively engage with unfamiliar content, such as a book club reading outside your usual genres, or a cooking class in a cuisine you have never tried before.
  • Routine novelty. Take a different route, try a new recipe from scratch, or reorganize a familiar workflow. Direct evidence for this tier is more limited, but it aligns with broader brain plasticity principles.

Consistency matters more than which activity you choose. But before you sign up for every class in town, it helps to know what the research cannot promise.

What the Research Cannot Promise You

No lifestyle activity has been proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease or guarantee that your memory will not change. That is worth saying clearly, because a lot of brain health content implies otherwise.

What research does suggest is that healthy habits can support cognitive function even when the brain is already showing signs of disease.

A Rush University study funded by the NIA, published in JAMA Neurology in 2024, followed 586 participants for up to 24 years and found that a healthy lifestyle was associated with better cognitive function even in people whose brains showed dementia-related pathology at autopsy (Dhana K et al., JAMA Neurology 2024;81(3):233-239).

Novelty and cognitive reserve are one piece of a larger picture. Sleep, physical activity, social connection, vascular health, and diet all appear in the same body of evidence.

The goal is not to prevent all change. It is to give your brain the best possible conditions to stay functional as long as it can.
